Reflections

This is typically the time of year that people reflect on the year past and set goals for the year to come. New Year’s Resolutions! I’m inclined to joke about how many of us break our resolutions on January 1 – good intentions, the road to failure is paved with many of those.

Recently, events in my life have caused me to reflect on more than just the past year. Some are good memories. Others are events I’d like to forget. But, I do believe that God has a purpose and a plan for our lives and sometimes the things we want to forget are the very things that have molded us and shaped us into the person He intends us to be. So, I share some of my reflections with you.

I have been often reminded of my very first client. She was a tiny little lady – Ms. Lucy. She was being financially exploited by the very person who was supposed to be caring for her. Her house was deplorable – you could smell it from the street. And her family had no idea what was going on. They lived out of town and trusted the person who was supposed to be caring for her. I called in the first of many favors asked of people over the last 7-1/2 years. The Director of Nursing at a nursing home agreed to admit her and work with us on the paperwork. I became like family to Ms. Lucy. She was so demented that she had no idea who I really was. Just the lady that visited on a regular basis and talked with her about her family. She died the summer of 2005 – just a few months before Katrina hit.

Several clients have died over the last 7-1/2 years. Many of you remember me talking so fondly of Mrs. Lomino. She was like a grandmother to me. I evacuated her for Katrina and again for Gustof. Another tiny lady. I had to trick her into the nursing home. Her family agreed to the placement. It broke my heart that she did not speak to me for a week. But, in the end, it was the right thing to do. I had walked into her house twice to the smell of gas – the gas burner on the stove was on with no flame. She became the life of the party at the nursing home with all her antics and confusion. She died the summer of 2009.

I cleaned out quite a few houses. Some full of devastation from Katrina – some just clean up from years of stockpiling. While that might seem like an unpleasant thing, my memories of those times are fond.

I lost a client to the floods of Katrina. She lived right behind my church. She refused to evacuate. The neighbors across the street also refused to leave – but they were able to escape the waters. I remember clearly talking to two of her friends who felt the guilt of not being able to save her. I searched for almost two months after the storm, with her daughter, trying to find her. We held on to hope that maybe she just couldn’t get to a phone or was in a hospital somewhere. Her daughter finally got word that her mother matched the description of a body at the morgue set up in Gonzales. I will never forget identifying her that day. And, again, I was able to call on a contact to get her body transferred to a funeral home quickly.

I evacuated a lady and her three daughters for Hurricane Ivan in 2004. That event was a story to be told. In the midst of it, it was not so funny. But, after the fact, it is comical to look back and remember the commotion she caused. She was one of my first clients. Her daughters became known as “the girls.” They loved their mother dearly despite the effects a brain tumor had on her personality. She died shortly after that. Those girls stayed by her side night and day those last few days. I will never forget how God ordained events in this situation to make everything come to completion before this lady passed on. I stay in touch with “the girls” still. They have grown into three of the finest young ladies I have ever known.

I buried another client not long after Katrina. He was in the hospital when Katrina hit. His family evacuated to Baton Rouge not knowing where he was. I will never forget the phone call I received on the Thursday after Katrina hit. A nurses aide from Thibodaux Regional Medical Center took it upon herself to make the call. She said she had my uncle in the hospital. Now, this man was black – and there is no way he was biologically related to me. But, at that moment, I realized that he was like family to me. My phone number was the only one he could remember. What a blessing to be able to contact his family and let them know where he was and that he was OK. He died right before Christmas 2005. I spoke at his funeral. What an honor!

Many clients have reminded me of my own relatives over the years. One lady reminds me of my maternal grandmother. One reminds me of a great aunt (Aunt Bea!)

I’ve had some very ungrateful clients too. I have had to sever ties with a handful over the years. When people don’t want to do what they need to be able to move on, I have to let go and allow them to pursue things their way. For the most part, I have kept in touch with family and friends. Each time I have had to sever ties, I pray about it and trust God to lead me in the right direction.

I had one situation that caused me tremendous grief – not just because of inconvenience, but because of the damage caused by lies, deceit and selfishness. Even though it was almost four years ago, the repercussions are still felt today. And I am sad for that because it keeps me from helping people who truly need it. People love to gossip. People love to repeat hearsay. It can often cause unjust damage. And it is not that it is about me personally – it is because it prevents me from helping others. In the end, all accusations were found to be false – but the rumors still abound today.

Personally, I saw my middle son serve in the Navy, meet his wife, and have two children. What a joy it is to be a grandparent!

I have been in a church since May 2005, Lakeview Christian Center. I am grateful to God for placing me in this incredible body of Christians who work tirelessly to honor God in every aspect of their lives. We have a broad ministry called Mercy Ministries. I am honored and humbled that God allows me to minister to people thru this ministry.

Over the last two to three years, the scope of my work has changed dramatically. There was a time that I had a dozen clients at a time. I was actively involved in their care – taking them to doctor appointments, setting out medications, coordinating every aspect of their life. Physically, this has taken its toll on my body – particularly my back. In December 2008, I sprained my ankle very badly. That event also contributed to the decline in my back. The Lord has graciously, slowly changed the scope of my work so that I am not so involved in the day to day care of nearly as many clients. I do have a handful that I still work with. However, I work a lot with people in evaluating the situation, consulting and advising.

I have helped numerous people apply for disability. Only one was denied and had to hire an attorney. Even then, he was approved upon appeal. Getting approval on initial application is always thought of as impossible. But, nothing is impossible with God. I have to tell people over and over again that my experience has not been denial. What a joy to share in that blessing and give God the glory.

I, personally, have been recently approved for disability. Because of the issues in my back as well as my feet, I am just not able to do as much physically. I still work part time – but it is amazing to see how much God accomplishes despite the limitations.

And what a blessing to see how God has provided financially! The sources ebb and flow over the years. Families who are in the position to donate, do so. And many of you have supported just because you recognize how important this ministry is.

I have said since inception that people should not have to pay to find out what benefits are out there. And they should not have to pay to apply for benefits. God made it clear to me from day one that I will not charge for what I do. And He has blessed me for my obedience. Every year the amount of donations increases. And when I think about all that has transpired in that category, I am blown away. In November of this year, I sent out an appeal for $1,000. I received double that! Things get tight and I used to worry. But, over the years, God has come thru so faithfully, that I can now experience tight purse strings and trust that He will provide.

Thank each and every one of you who have contributed financially. You are truly a blessing. And thank each and every one of you who continues to pray and support spiritually and emotionally. I cannot do this without you.

So, as the year has ended and 2012 is upon us, I pray that each of you experiences God’s peace and grace in abundance. I pray that you might know Him more and more and the love and compassion that He has in store for you. Most importantly, I pray that you know the gift of salvation that God has for you. The free gift of Jesus Christ!

So, my goal for Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry for 2012 is to serve even more people than I have ever served in one year. That I might have exponentially more opportunities to share the love of Christ thru helping people meet their healthcare needs.

“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8

“I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might.” Ephesians 1:16-18

Ministry Update

It’s been time for an update for over a month. It’s been busy around here, but it has also been very good. God continues to be faithful in His provisions as well as sending people my way to help. I am humbled and honored to be gifted to help people at a time in their lives that can be very overwhelming and confusing.

At the end of August, I was pleasantly surprised by a significant donation from a family member. I am so touched by events like that – the way God provides just what I need at just the time I need it. I am so grateful to every one of you who have answered the call to donate. As we approach the end of the year, please remember that donations are tax deductible. Please consider a donation to help Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry continue the valuable work God has called me to do. There is an urgent need for $1,000 by November 1st. No donation is too little and certainly none is too large.

I have been privileged to experience some pleasant surprises over the last couple of months. The first week in September, God provided a place for me to have a personal retreat. I try to get away at least once a year for a week to get with God and allow Him to minister to me and speak to me in whatever area He deems the need. It was a good week – lots of rest as well as plenty of Bible study, prayer and worship.

I also was able to spend a week in New Iberia caring for my parents. While my physical limitations keep me from doing much, I was able to be helpful. I am also headed that way again soon to apply for VA benefits for my parents. It is especially rewarding to be able to serve my family with my gifts and talents.

I am currently in Washington State visiting my son and his family. I am very grateful for the donation of frequent flyer miles to be able to make this trip. Another amazing way that God provides. I am enjoying the company of my son and his family. My granddaughter celebrated her first birthday last week. I am happy to have been able to be here for that event. I am also happy to have had the time to connect with my son and daughter-in-law – I love them both dearly and am grateful for our time together.

And even while out of town, ministry continues. I have fielded several calls from those in need. I am happy to receive and handle those calls. Needs do not stop just because I am out of town. Service is a life-long commitment. I am happy to serve. It gives me great joy to do so – for it is God I am serving as I serve those in need. And it gives me a chance to show others what Jesus looks like and to share the Gospel through my life.

I continue to work with a few clients with their day to day needs. One lady seems to be settling down. She has had quite a time of health problems since April. However, I think she is on the mend and getting back to normal. I am grateful to be there for her as her only family member that is interested in her wellbeing lives in Covington – that is a good 30 – 45 minutes away. While she has traveled often to check on her mother and care for her, it is difficult and I am glad to be able to fill in the gaps for her. I believe we are both breathing a sigh of relief that things have settled down.

Another client continues to resist and recognize her need for my assistance. I press in as the family is at the end of their rope in trying to care for her. I am convinced that God does want me to help this lady and that we all need to be patient with her.

I have had numerous phone calls for consultation with families on various issues. I have brought one lady to apply for disability and will be doing so with a few others in the next couple of weeks. I am always amazed at how God puts together the timing for people. He always has a plan and a reason for things to fall in place the way they do. It is incredible to be able to be a part of His plan and to be able to step back and see His hand all over the process.

I have my own Disability Determination hearing this Thursday. Please be in prayer for me that this would be a positive outcome. Pray that God would ordain my every word and that the Administrative Judge would recognize my limitations and award a positive decision.

Thank you all for your continued prayers, support and encouragement. You have no idea just how much that means to me and how important it is on a day to day basis. And …

I continue to pray that “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation of the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power.” Ephesians 1:17-19

Ministry Update

I read a meditation recently that really struck home and caused me to take heed in my own life. I will share a portion of what I read.

“With this picture in mind, God began teaching me about being an aroma of Christ. … my biggest struggle is still in ‘doing’ for the Lord instead of just ‘being’ totally consumed by Him. The word missionary implies ‘doing.’ Even in the newsletters that I send …, I focus on what we’ve done, and I certainly don’t report how I smell! I’ve learned that I try to live up to expectations of others. It’s a real struggle. … God does not measure success as we do. He wants to see a heart that has been conformed to the image of Christ. We are not to abide in Christ so that we get results in our work. We are to abide in Christ so that we are transformed into His image; we begin to look, sound and, yes, even smell like Him.” (From Voices of The Faithful by Beth Moore)

I know people don’t necessarily see me as a missionary. But, the reality is, I am. Very different from your typical (or stereotypical) definition of missionary. But, nonetheless, that is what I am. And so this meditation has caused me to ask the questions “Do I smell like Christ? Do people see, hear and smell Christ as I minister to them? Am I so caught up in doing that I am not being what He wants me to be?”

So, this month my ministry update is very different.

I continue to work with a few clients. The magnitude of my work is much slower due to my physical limitations. I do a lot of phone consulting and have had a few appointments for basic advice and direction. I have been constantly and with every opportunity sharing Christ with everyone I come in contact with.

I praise God for a large, unexpected donation. He always comes through and I am ever so grateful. The reality is – that donation helped me to catch up and stay current. My car is in the shop today and that will cost $1,000. I am grateful to have the funds. However, the need is still there for donations to continue God’s work. Please prayerfully consider a donation.

I covet your support and prayers. May God bless each and every one of you.

Ministry Update

Things continue to be busy with Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry. As always, I thank you for your interest, prayers and support.

This month, I must start out with asking for your prayers for this ministry. God has sustained me and carried me through over seven years of ministry to the elderly and disabled in the Greater New Orleans area. You are all aware of the physical limitations that have haunted me for the last year or so. Please pray that God would renew my physical strength and determination at this time. I am certain this horrible heat wave we are having has a tremendous effect on me. I am hopeful that it will pass soon – for it is very difficult for me to function properly and effectively these days. Please also pray for how I encounter and interact with the people God has given me to serve. Pray that my words might be sweeter than honey and that I might present Christ to each person I serve. For the ultimate goal in all I do is for people to know Christ and the love He has for them. I share His love by serving their needs.

With that being said here is an update on the people I am currently serving.

My lady who is moving into Christopher Homes ended up in the hospital and her move has been delayed. The doctor told her she could not be alone for a few weeks. She has diabetes and that seems to be at the center of the need for hospitalization. She lives with her children and wants desperately to be back in a place of her own. Please pray that her diabetes stabilizes and that she can move into her apartment.

The lady who completed radiation continues to have some emotional issues. As we all have had in our lives – she is having family issues that weigh heavy on her heart. Someone was very unkind to her and that really puts her into a deep depression and increased anxiety. On top of that, she got her medications mixed up again. While I was hopeful that she could do it herself, it is now apparent that I will have to put out her medications for her. I always try to push my clients to be as independent as possible. In this lady’s case, she is young – so, it is hard for her to accept that she cannot be trusted to handle her medication. She accepts it, but it disturbs her. Please pray that she might be freed of anxiety. Also pray that we might find some areas of socialization for her. We both realize this is a need. She falls between the cracks with qualifying for services that provide transportation because she is too young.

Buying a house is a huge thing. And now I know why God prevented me from doing so myself. I am now responsible for handling all the business matters as it pertains to the lady who bought her house. Please pray that God would give me supernatural patience with this lady. In my effort to push her to be more independent, it seems she wants to be more and more dependent upon me for the tiniest details of her life. The more I push her to do things that she is capable of, the more she pulls closer to me and does not want to do anything on her own. We discussed this with her psychiatrist this week. We all agree that there is no dementia here and it is not a medication issue either. Please pray that she might be freed of her anxiety and insecurities. Pray that I hear clearly from God on how to deal appropriately with her.

I am working with a lady who has been told by her doctors that she cannot drive again until she retakes the test. He has cleared her medically but has documented in her record that she has to take the test. Please pray for me as well as the other friends in her life that she might come to accepting the fact that she should not be driving. It is a hard thing to come to and I feel bad for her that she is facing this. She really is doing well physically and is the product of one of the biggest miracles I have ever seen. Pray that her eyes be open to God’s presence and power in her life.

The lady who was resisting my help is doing much better with accepting my presence in her life. At this point, she pretty much has to as the doctors have told her not to walk unless absolutely necessary. She has some wounds on her feet that need to heal. We have been working on some delicate issues in her life and she is coming around to accepting what she knows she really needs to do. Please pray that she might see her need for God in her life. Pray that she sees Jesus in me and that she comes to know Him in a real and personal way. Please also pray for peace within her family as they also love and care for her.

I lost another client a few weeks ago. This lady had elective surgery for hernia repair. Complications arose and she ended up in ICU. Her heart and kidneys just could not handle the stress. Please pray for her son. He is having a hard time with this along with having a hard time with life in general. He admitted that he was not there for his mother as he should have been. I think this weighs heavy on him. Pray that somehow through all this he and his family would come to know Jesus in a real way. There also arose problems with the staff at the hospital. I am praying about whether or not to meet with Administration to report these issues. My goal would have to been in order to prevent such problems from happening with other patients at this hospital. Please pray for clarity for me as I consider this endeavor.

The other lady that was in the hospital went home after only a couple of days. She ended up having a bleeding ulcer. Can you imagine? 94 years old with a bleeding ulcer! And what amazes me is she is so demented, I don’t know how that could happen! But, she is back in the nursing home and seems to be holding her own. Please pray for her daughter that she might accept the fact that her mother could die any day now. They have never lived apart and I know this is going to be a tremendous loss for her.

Again, thank you for your care and consideration. As always, there are financial needs. I am so grateful to God for His continued provisions. Right now, there is a need for about $1,500 to carry me through the month of August. Please consider a tax-deductible donation. You will be blessed as you give faithfully to God’s work.

I pray that “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation of the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power.” Ephesians 1:17-19

Ministry Update

I have so many exciting things to tell you about what has been going on with this ministry! I thank the Lord for giving me the time today to finally get to this update.

About 6 weeks ago a lady who used to be the nanny for my friend called me to help her find a place to live. She had begun to call places herself, but was getting frustrated. We visited one place about 3 weeks ago and yesterday she signed a lease! Praise God for His provision. We had to go to Social Security to get an award letter with her birth date indicated. That was the fastest trip to Social Security I have ever made in the last 7 years. We were in and out of there literally in 10 minutes! She is moving into Christopher Homes and is so happy to be back in her own place. In the course of helping her find an apartment, other issues have come up that I have been able to help her with as well. Transportation with the city’s para-transit system has been applied for. And, we will also be going to her clinic to fill out a request to write off a balance she evidently has from many years of built-up charges.

Another lady has completed her 4 weeks of radiation. She received a certificate, rang the bell and we took pictures to memorialize the day. She is cancer free. Another testimony of God’s grace. This lady also has had a hard time getting her psychiatric medications straight. I am happy to report that at her last doctor’s appointment he said he did not need to see her for 3 months – unless she needs. Praise God! We have also found a Senior Center that has younger attendees. She has been a few times and we are working out the kinks for transportation for her to get there on a regular basis.

1-1/2 year ago a client was offered to purchase the double that she rented in Uptown New Orleans. Things were moving very slow and we actually gave up on that place and began looking elsewhere. At just the right time (God’s time) the owner finally called and got the ball rolling. We closed a few weeks ago. I thank God for all the people He put in my path to help in that process. Now, we need to rent out the other side. If you know anyone looking for an apartment Uptown (near Tulane and Loyola) please give them my information. Rent is $850 a month. It can be used as a 1 or 2 bed-room. All appliances provided – including washer and dryer.

I have begun working with another lady. She is truly a product of God’s blessing. She was in a horrible mis-hap in April. I am happy to report she is back home and doing quite well. We are working out the kinks in her doctor’s appointments and getting her medications straight. I am grateful to be working with a great home health agency who really works well with communicating to me her needs.

Another lady I have been working with for a few months is coming around to allow me to minister to her. She is having a hard time with some things – but is slowly working towards goals that will benefit her.

I am sad to report that I have two ladies in the hospital right now. One had elective hernia surgery that has turned into a nightmare. She was not very cooperative with what she needed to do to get moving. Consequently, she got pneumonia. Her heart and kidneys are already in not-so-good shape. Therefore she is currently on the ventilator and dialysis. Her son is having a very hard time with all of this – particularly because he did not want her to have this surgery. The doctors are a little more encouraged. This past Sunday, she did seem to acknowledge her son’s and my presence in her room. So, I am hopeful for a full recovery. Although, it will be a long one. I am grateful that her son is turning to me and trusting the wisdom God has given me to help him understand all that is going on in his mother’s life right now.

The other lady in the hospital is 94 years old. She has been telling her daughter and others that she is dying – for several weeks. She began to have trouble with speech. I thought they would call in hospice due to her age and fragile condition. Instead, the doctor ordered tests and sent her to the hospital for a blood transfusion. I was in the ER with her on Tuesday. She was scared and confused as to why she was there and why her daughter was not there. I pray for God’s will in this lady’s life – that she would not suffer much and that she and her daughter accept His sovereignty in their lives. They both know the Lord – so, that is a tremendous blessing!

I continue to struggle with my own personal physical limitations. My back continues to give me problems on a regular basis. My ankle is also still not healed. I think I will have trouble with my ankle for the rest of my life. Consequently, my back will also be fragile as well.

I praise God today for His financial provisions for this ministry. Every month, He provides just what I need to carry me through. At this point, I need about $1,500 to carry me through July. Please prayerfully consider a donation. God will bless you as you give.

I pray that God bless each of you richly – thank you all so much for your continued support. I leave you with the scripture passage that is the very heart of this ministry. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23, 24

Ministry Update

It has been extremely busy here at Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry. And the need is urgent for funding.

I have four main clients that I am working with who all require daily attention.

One lady is in radiation treatment. This requires five days a week treatments. She is also having quite a few follow up doctor appointments – one to two a week. We have had a minor snafu with her medications. I am glad I did not make the mistake; but, I am also not happy that the pharmacy did not fill her prescription as the doctor wrote it. This resulted in increased anxiety and sleepless nights for her. On contacting the doctor and reviewing the copy of the prescription in her file, we found out that it was the pharmacy that made the mistake and was able to rectify the situation quickly.

Another lady is buying the double she has been living in. This is requiring my diligence in making sure she has all the information ahead of time as far as the condition of the house. I have to make sure finances are in place. She too has doctor appointments to attend. Along with that she has a cat that is like a child to her. So, vet appointments have to be fit in. Add to that her extreme anxiety that arises with all of these things. And she loves to spend money; so, I have to constantly remind her of her budgetary limitations.

Another lady is scheduled for surgery. So, we have had to get clearance from her Cardiologist as well as her primary care doctor. She also has anxiety issues that affect her heart – resulting in hospital admission. While it is typically just an overnight stay – I still have to make sure she gets home with proper instructions. This lady is Hispanic, so there is a language barrier. While I am learning a few Spanish words, my repertoire is limited. She can speak some English, but not much. So, that is a challenge. But, we do overcome and do fairly well. She has a son who lives locally but does not participate in her care at all. It is sad because she aches for him to get his act together and have a better relationship with him.

I am also trying to help a lady get her house in physical order as well as get her healthcare needs met on a regular basis. I work more with her family. And the challenge is to help her realize the changes she needs to make in order to stay healthy as well as financially prudent. I am also working with the family in advising concerning the father’s care.

In between all these appointments I continue to field calls advising people on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, VA Benefits, etc. Some calls require only a few minutes, other calls require anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours to handle. Some, I help fill out paperwork and facilitate delivery. Others, I guide to where they need to go and what they need to do. Many just do not have a clue where to turn.

It still remains that people just do not realize the value of this ministry until they actually experience the need and the blessing. Please consider a donation to help support the work. There is an urgent need for $1,000. If you are local, I can pick up a check. Otherwise, you can mail a check to the address below. Remember, all donations are tax deductible.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

Ministry Update

Well, I have been saying I need to do an update for a month now! Balancing life has become interesting these days. I am grateful for the Lord’s presence and power in my life to sustain me, guide me and cover me as I seek to continue the work He has me doing for Him.

I am happy to report that May 1, 2011 marks seven years (that’s right seven years) since Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry was born. Unbelievable – only in God’s economy is such a feat possible! I am happy to be writing this newsletter the day after Easter – the greatest celebration in all Christianity. How exciting for me to celebrate seven years so close to Easter.

In the last two months I have worked with many people in many different ways.

I have two on-going clients who require much from me on pretty much a daily basis. Both these ladies have emotional issues as their major disability. I am challenged to meet their needs while also allowing them (and sometimes pushing them) to be as independent as possible. The aging process takes away so much independence. When you compound that with mental illness, it is very hard to accept limitations. And yet, these two ladies are capable of so much. My role often means just pushing them to be as independent as they are capable of being while meeting their needs in the areas that they lack. One of these ladies found a lump in her breast that was cancerous. It was a great opportunity to witness to God’s favor in her life to her and her two children. The surgery went better than anyone could imagine. She had no drains. And no chemo or radiation! Praise God!

I have met with several people helping them to get plugged into services available in the Greater New Orleans area. I am still amazed at how many people do not know that the VA and Charity Hospital and clinics are operating. People sometimes look at me with this amazed, dumbfounded look on their face. But, YES, the VA does have clinics running and Charity has a temporary hospital open as well as many clinics throughout the Greater New Orleans area. Getting into Charity is not always easy – but, the Lord has blessed me with the ability to get people referred to any of their various clinics.

I have also worked with several families in walking through needs and deciding just what the next step is for their loved ones. Some require a little help with sitters, while others are facing the reality that nursing home placement may be in the near future. Others have to face the fact that their neglect or mismanagement of their healthcare and life in general has led to serious complications. I often face people that do not want to take responsibility for their current situation. I can only present the options and they have to come to terms with what they have to do.

After almost a year of encouraging my neighbor to apply for disability, we did so in March. He was approved in four weeks! I continue to witness to this man in hopes that he realizes how much he needs the presence and power of the Lord in his life. I pray that his quick approval will speak to him of God’s infinite grace and mercy in his life. I hope to get him to let me help him with his budget now.

I continue to be amazed that God has actually put me in a position to help people with budgeting issues. As I meet with people and work with helping meet their healthcare needs, finances always come up. More and more are willing to receive from me the wisdom from God to help them in basic budgetary needs.

I finally took a lady to get her resident card renewed. The obstacles with her birth certificate were finally overcome. From there, we had to go to Social Security to correct her birth date with them. Now, I face the battle of getting them to fix the error.

Another lady was also finally approved for disability recently. What a blessing!

I still have a couple of disability applications pending – including my own. I await an appeals date on my application as well as someone else. One application has not been denied yet. I pray the Lord is favorable in all situations.

My back issues have become cumbersome – more annoying than anything else. But, I trust the Lord to carry me through as He has for the many years I have had these problems. I see a neurologist on Friday to explore any possible options I may have. In the meantime, I balance as best I can to not do too much that I might hurt myself more. I am grateful to the Lord for allowing me to continue to be available for people to advise and consult despite the physical limitations.

I was blessed to receive an abundance of donations in February right after the last update. It was helpful in meeting some basic needs as well as some bigger financial expenses. Thank you to each of you who contributed. The needs continue and I ask that you seek the Lord as to how you might help financially with this ministry.

I leave you with the scripture passage that has been the foundation of all I do.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23, 24

Ministry Update

It has been over a month since I sent out a newsletter. For a while, I didn’t know what to say at all. Then I realized what message I needed to convey. Then I had to pray about just how to say what I need to say. I got an e-mail from my daughter-in-law. It is one of those daily e-mails sent out for inspiration. The subject line reads “Insightful Illustrations.” That e-mail gave me the foundation of what to say. So, I will copy it for you to read and then pick up again afterwards.

“After Louis Daguerre invented one of the earliest photographic processes in 1837, the French Government declared his invention “Open to the world.” Immediately, “Daguerreotypes” began appearing from every continent; photographs of the great cities of London, Paris, Cairo, and New York. But when these early photographs of busy city streets were displayed, viewers came away from the galleries puzzled. There were no people in these photos. Nowhere in these pictures of Paris show any people. It was as if all these cities were ghost towns. Where were all the people?
There were indeed many people when the photos were taken. The reason they did not appear in the pictures is because the people were in motion and it took more than ten minutes for the images to form on the chemically treated plates that were used in the cameras of that day.
Like the Daguerreotype’s inability to discern people and animals in motion, so are our feeble senses inadequate to discern the actions of the living God. God is living and active and is light years ahead of our scrutiny as we attempt to “figure out” what He is doing behind the scenes on our behalf. The Scripture says, “His judgments are unsearchable and His ways are unfathomable.” (Romans 11:33)
Can’t see God in your circumstances? Don’t worry, we are called to walk by faith not by sight. God is there, though you cannot see Him, and He is working out all things for His glory and your good.
PRAYER: Dear Father in heaven, I have worn myself sick trying to figure out what You are doing in my life. Help me to rest in your love, power, and wisdom, as I seek to please You and give You first place in my life. Amen.”

I went to Washington State in October open to the possibility that God may want me to move there. Even as I came back I felt even more so that it was God’s will for me to move. However, as time passed, it seemed less and less likely that it was His will. Even then I still sat in wait for Him to tell me “the rest of the story.” I felt all that needed to happen was for Him to provide the funding. In late January as I met with Pastoral leadership and my accountability partner it became very evident that I am not moving anywhere. And I am also not going to be starting a Love Inc affiliate. I do still believe that Love Inc would fill a great need in New Orleans. But, I no longer believe I am to have a leadership role in making that happen.

As the illustration above indicates, we are not always privy to the details of God’s work. It is only up to us to be obedient to His calling for us. I can only say that my considering moving was a lesson in obedience for me. The why I do not know and I may never know. It really does not matter.

About a year and a half ago the work that I do here began to change. While I kept busy, what I did changed some. As October approached work slowed down to almost nothing. When I came back it continued to be slow until about three weeks ago. In recent weeks, I have fielded many phone calls and began working with quite a few new people. My primary focus is still healthcare. However, my focus is more on helping people seek out the benefits and agencies in the area that can provide for their needs. I am helping several people with the Disability Application process. I have helped a couple file for additional benefits through Social Security, Medicaid, and Food Stamps. I am also working with several people who are trying to get on their feet spiritually, financially, and emotionally. I continue to consult with families seeking options in healthcare. My services continue to be free to the consumer. I still work strictly on donations.

In Exodus 17, Moses recounts a battle he led the Israelites in fighting. While Moses was not able to directly fight, he was called to be a pivotal part of the process. Verse 12 tells us “But Moses’ hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.”

I need some people to support my hands. As I continue to do the work the Lord has for me, there are needs to be met. There are several ways you can help.

I have repeatedly asked for people to go to www.goodsearch.com and sign up for their toolbar choosing Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry as your charity. When you cruise the internet searching, every time you search money is donated to this ministry. You can also sign up for www.goodshop.com. When you shop on the internet with any of their vendors a percentage of what you spend will be donated to Healthcare Solutions. There are many popular companies who support this site. This is an easy way to support this ministry. In my opinion, it is a no brainer. Yet, very few people have signed up. In fact, for the year 2010, I did not even receive a check from them. The minimum of $20 has to be met in order for them to mail a check. Please consider signing up and downloading the toolbar.

Another way to help is to consider a monthly donation. All donations are tax deductible. No amount is too large or too small. Even $10 a month makes a huge difference. Donations continue to be very low. At this point there is a need for $2,000 to take care of needs by March 1st.

Prayer is a very important part of this ministry. I covet your prayers on a daily basis – for myself as well as those I serve.

Volunteers are also welcome. Many of those I serve require help with grocery shopping, medication runs, light housekeeping, even sometimes just companionship.

Please consider any and all of my suggestions and feel free to make some of your own.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Seven years ago at this time I was fasting and praying about what God wanted from my life. I was in a job that I knew He did not intend for me to keep. On faith, I quit that job, trusting Him to tell me exactly what He wanted from me. On May 1, 2004 Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry was birthed. On God’s very specific direction, I was called to counsel, educate, consult and manage healthcare for the elderly and disabled. His gifting to me is the ability and knowledge to swim through and navigate healthcare and benefits for the needy and disabled. God was and has always been very specific that I am not to charge for what I do. Over the last seven years, many people have had a hard time understanding that. But, I have never wavered from that very important aspect of this ministry. Shortly after I began Healthcare Solutions – A Christian Ministry, I was offered a job by a local non-profit. They offered a nice salary and benefit package for me to work for them and do just what I am doing. I know it was a test for me to stand firm in God’s direction for this ministry. Often, people will tell me I need to charge for what I do.

Over the years I have had clients who have been in a position to donate. Some have donated fairly according to their means. Others maybe not so fairly based on how much I did for them. However, I put that in God’s hands. It is not my job to tell someone how much to donate. When the subject comes up I tell each one that they have to determine in their heart what to give. It has amazed me on many occasions how those who have the most meager means will donate much more than those with abundant means. I am often reminded of the widow who gave everything she had – Jesus pointed out that what she gave meant so much more than those who give with a stingy/greedy heart. I have also refused to accept donations from people who I know really could not afford.

Many of you have benefited from my services – either directly or through my serving a family member, friend, co-worker, etc. Many of you have been very generous. Some of you have donated just because you see the value and need for a ministry such as this. Many of you are in a position to give – but you do not. This ministry cannot exist without monthly donations to sustain the work that is desperately needed.

I continue to take people to the doctor – working as a translator of sorts helping the patient to better understand their condition and what they need to do at home. I continue to help many people apply for benefits – disability, VA, Medicaid, Medicare, etc.

If I were a missionary serving somewhere overseas I dare say that many would have a different attitude about contributions. I am here to tell you that what I do is just as important to the kingdom of God as any overseas missionary. You do not have to go overseas to find people that need to know and experience the love of Christ in their lives. I do that every day. I ask that you please consider a donation to this ministry – either one time, or monthly. Please pray that the Lord would reveal to you His will in this area. If you know others who have a heart for ministry and the ability to donate, please forward this to them.

It has been three weeks since my last update. In that time I have received a total of $700. $200 of that is a regular monthly donation. I was pleasantly surprised by a $500 donation from a “sometimes” supporter in Illinois. At the end of August I began a quest to raise $10,000 in a short time. The main reason for attempting that amount was to prevent having to ask so often for donations and I could focus on other tasks. Since that time I have received $7,265 in donations. With a little over two weeks left to the year, my estimate was not far off. However, donations are the lowest they have ever been in the history of this ministry. While the initial push for funds did bring some donations in, as I said in my first request back in August, there were expenses to be covered.

Today, the need is more urgent than it has been in many years. There is a need for $2,000 before the first of the year – at least $500 by the end of this week. Please prayerfully consider a year end, tax-deductible donation to this ministry.

Because of the shortage of funds, I have been trying to sell some of my grandmother’s “Tid Bits.” This is similar to Chex Mix, but her special recipe. If you are interested in some, please let me know and I will send details on prices and sizes.

Divine appointments continue to happen on a regular basis. God has made it clear that Love Inc is sorely needed in the Greater New Orleans area. I have had several situations come before me that God makes me keenly aware that Love Inc would be the place to send these people if we had an affiliate. New Orleans will have an affiliate and it will be unfolding quickly as the New Year comes.

While I have not sent out “The Solution of The Day” in a while, I have felt the Lord prompting me to do so for Christmas. I will begin a small series tomorrow focusing on the true meaning of Christmas and the scriptures that tell us of the birth of Our Lord. If you are not on that e-mail list, please let me know if you want to be added. Or, you can go to the website www.healthcaresolutionsacm.org to read it daily. However, they do not accumulate. So, if you miss a day, it will not be there the next.

I pray you each have a blessed and merry Christmas. May your New Year be filled with grace and peace.
